Benay Ward for
Sandoval County Treasurer

I am eager to serve the citizens of Sandoval County with integrity, professionalism and respect. I have more than 15 years experience in county government, serving mainly as the Quality Control Supervisor for the San Juan County Assessor’s Office. This was an audit and compliance function but also included the eligibility and verification of tax saving benefits available to property owners. I also served as the Chief Deputy Assessor, managing the office, and ensuring all aspects of the office were efficiently accomplished. Working full time, I earned my Master's degree in Business Administration from New Mexico Highlands University. While completing my Master’s I co-authored an article published in the Journal of Finance & Accountancy, addressing the expectation of taxpayers when community needs were met. My direct experience and education give me a well-rounded perspective of assisting the public and working with commissioners and county leadership.

The County must reevaluate all projects as we begin to see the impact of COVID19 on our community. Emphasis should be on projects that are most beneficial to a positive recovery for our businesses and citizens. The investment policy for Sandoval County, in this economic climate, must achieve the highest and safest returns possible according to the law. Working cooperatively with the Board of Commissioners, as the County Board of Finance, and with the services of a financial adviser, I will develop an investment strategy that tailors investments to meet the goals and expectations of the county. With open communication and a clear goal, the county will be provided safe, liquid and high yield investments.

One of the biggest challenges faced by Sandoval County is growth. It is slated to continue to be the fastest-growing county in NM. With this growth, is a need to project and plan for the needs of our community. I will enhance the investments for our growing county by investing idle funds to a greater benefit for our future. Through the duties of the Treasurer, I will support the infrastructure, housing, economy and education for our ever-expanding county with a healthy investment strategy. As your Treasurer, I will be dedicated and involved in fulfilling the duties of the Office.

My family and I moved to New Mexico in 1977. My parents and siblings moved on but I remained here. I have been a Republican from the time I was old enough to vote. My beliefs in God, Family and Country are what I am centered on.

With a solid educational foundation, an enthusiasm for financial management and my years of experience, I believe that I am the best candidate for Sandoval County Treasurer. I am Benay Ward. I would like to thank you for your consideration and would appreciate your vote in the general election in November 2020.

It is paramount that any government office, knows the laws by which they are governed and never forget the responsibilities to the citizens they server. The laws which affect the Treasurer's Office must be applied reasonably and accurately to everyone and not be ignored or waived for special interest groups.
I pledge to uphold these laws and to ensure that all property owners are treated fairly within the law.
